The Perfect Picket Fence
Tom
and Allie’s ten-year anniversary was coming up in a few months, and Tom knew
that he absolutely had to have the perfect present for his perfect wife. Allie
had stood by him through his ups and downs in work and put up with more than he
could thank her for. Tom had been brainstorming for weeks now. He’d just about
been to every jewelry store in town, but nothing seemed to exceed the
expectations he had for his wife.
She’d been such a caring, and
loving partner for the past decade. What could he possibly give her that would
mean as much to her and she did to him? Then it hit him…. Eight years ago when
they’d had their first child and needed a bigger home they’d moved a little
ways out of town to an older, white, wooden house. There were so many wonderful
things about their southern, suburban home. It was the perfect size. A peaceful
little creek ran melodiously through the woods just at the end of their
property. But their favorite part was the big, beautiful yard where they ha set
up a play set, a tire swing, soccer nets, and houses for their dogs.
The only drawback to their peaceful
little property was that it was just off the main road where cars came flying
around the corner, and with five beautiful children between eight and two Tom definitely
worried. Allie had made comments occasionally about her childhood home and how
she loved the white picket fence that enclosed her family’s farm. Her eyes
always sparkled when she told stories of her brothers and sisters sitting on
the fence eating watermelon and watching the sun set on summer evenings.
Tom knew that building Allie the perfect white picket fence for
their ten-year anniversary was the perfect gift. It would be a wonderful way to
remind Allie of all her wonderful childhood memories, and make some of their
own. Not to mention, Tom would feel much safer with a fence keeping the kids
from wandering into the road or creek.
